The First Post Challenge

Thank you to Sophie from Sophie Speaks Up for nominating me for this challenge! I always get nervous when I type the name of a blogger on my blog, in case it’s the wrong name. Especially when they’ve nominated me for something. Gosh, it would be so embarrassing if I got it wrong… So, in the hopes of preventing a potential faux pas, I always go onto the person’s “About” and check about five times just to make sure that I’ve read their name correctly.

In this case I can assure you that Sophie’s full name is Sophia Katharin, or Sophie Kat for short. See, I’ve done my homework. Hehe. Now it will be REALLY embarrassing if it actually turned out that it wasn’t her that nominated me, and I’d just innocently clicked on some other blogger’s “About” that was open in a tab on my computer… The idea of the situation is making me shiver with fear and humiliation. Gosh. Please. Be. Sophie. You did nominate me for the challenge, right?

See, that’s another thing I worry about – that I wasn’t nominated for the challenge. LOL. And it’s okay that I used the word “LOL” here, despite it being a drastically informal and typically-teenage-girl word, because I literally laughed out loud. Yes, alone in my room, with my computer in front of me, I laughed at the screen. ALOUD. So, LOL it is, if it turns out that I haven’t been nominated for this. Haha. I laughed again. In real life. Like, imagine if I’d just read someone’s post and then convinced myself that it had linked to Thisizapen. Self-Nomination. Hah!

I don’t know WHY I find that so funny. It just makes me laugh imagining it!!

SHUT UP Jamila and get ON with this thing.

Okay, yeah, I am.

No, you’re not, you’re procrastinating.

That’s because you’re making me.

No, you’re making me.

What?

Here are the rules for this:

1) Copy-paste, link, pingback or whatever way you want to, your first post.

2) State what type of post that was. E.G. Introduction, Story, Poem.

3) Explain why that was your first post.

4) Nominate 5 other bloggers.Β Five because I know the pain of opening a lot of tabs at once.

Obviously I copy-and-pasted them because I couldn’t be bothered to try to re-word the rules πŸ™‚

Here is my first post (Go read it now if you want to live):

What this blog is about

I wrote that as an introduction to my blog, listing my interests so that people who liked similar things could follow me. Just to make it clear, NO, I did not think that Nirvana was a heavy metal band; I listed the fact that I liked Nirvana separately to the fact that I liked learning about Heavy Metal. So, no connection between them. I like Nirvana, which is GRUNGE and I also like learning about Heavy Metal bands.

That post actually got ZERO likes, despite me tagging it! I’ve also noticed that I didn’t use capital letters for each word in the title. That makes me uncomfortable.

I made “What this blog is about” my first post to give people an idea of what I would be writing about. Obviously I could have just done that in my “About” – but that wasn’t good enough for me; I was young and reckless then. I liked to live fast; I wanted to die young. Aah, good times, good times. But them days are over now. And, like I said, I made that my first post so that people with similar interests would find it and follow me.

My second post, Reasons You MUST Go To Stonehenge On The Solstice had precisely TWO likes. It took me ages to write… I wrote it last year when I’d just got back from Stonehenge on the Summer Solstice for the first time. Unfortunately my dad won’t take me there this year… However YOU still have hope! Go now, my child, complete your destiny, before it is too late! XD

  1. So I very seldom start a blog at the beginning. I jump in, and sometimes follow links to other posts if I have time and they look interesting. I do, however, ALWAYS read the “about me” page. So – just my opinion – but I think if you want to tell people things about you, that’s where they should go – and you can update it periodically as your thoughts and interests change.

I enjoyed reading your list of interests! We have the quite a few in common – 2, 3, 4 (although I suck at it), 10, 12 (probably not the same as you, though!), 17, 18 and 20 (I spent three days there in 1998 and am just longing to visit again).

    • Hello Belladonna!
You’re very right about it being better to list your interests in the designated “About” place; I too seldom, if ever, start reading a blog from the beginning! But remember, I was young, inexperienced and foolish when I wrote that intro post XD
Wow, you like drumming? That’s really cool. What type of drums?
By the way, it was fun reading which of the numbers we had in common, and going back to my first post to see which items corresponded with which numbers.
I’ve noticed that you’ve commented on a few of my posts lately and I haven’t replied – this is not because I’m being rude, I just haven’t got round to it πŸ™‚ Thank you!!
      And have a great day.

      • Ermmm … blush … I sometimes like the sound of people whacking on drums, and the few times I’ve whacked ’em myself have been enjoyable. But no, I’m not a drummer. I think I meant to list that one!

Don’t worry about non-responses. It would be annoying if you *never* responded – well, no, not annoying, but I would stop commenting – but you respond more often than not, and I do understand busy… πŸ™‚

  2. Hey, I’m new to this so please don’t give up on this reply! I don’t think you can private message on here so I’m just gunna say what I was going to here (if you have any advice with comments, would be helpful!)

Firstly, I would just like you to know that I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog, your writing style is so mature and I find what you write about not only interesting but relatable (and as a 19 year old that’s impressive stuff!)

I also wanted to ask about how to get followers ( I know I shouldn’t ask but as I said I’m new on here and have no idea how to get people to actually find let alone read my posts). I would appreciate any advice!

Anyway, I look forward to reading more from you soon!

(P.S – the name’s Holly, just so you know!)

    • Hello Holly!
      Firstly πŸ˜‰
I’m so pleased that you’ve enjoyed my blog, it’s really satisfying for me to hear that and I VERY much appreciate you reading and saying so!!

      Welcome to WordPress blogging!

If you’re interested in getting people following and reading your blog, then there’s nothing better you can do than to read and follow other people’s blogs – which I can see you’re already doing, if I’m not mistaken. The more people you follow, and the more of their posts you Like (remember to hit the Like button when you’ve read a good post) and comment on, the more likely they are to check out your blog and do the same.

Also, remember to tag your blog posts (with relevant topics obviously XD). That way more people will find your posts. (The “tags” section will be on the vertical bar next to the draft.) Apparently up to 15 tags is the optimal amount.

Opinionated Man (http://aopinionatedman.com/) has some really good tips for getting views. I’d recommend checking out his blog and looking for them. He also knows a lot about Powerblogging which you may or may not be interested in.

Remember, people will click on catchy titles. And pictures will capture attention.

You’re right, WP doesn’t have a private-messaging system; I have Twitter (@JamilaJJ) if you want to get hold of me there and ask more about blogging. Otherwise it’s perfectly fine to just ask in the comments section.

Hope that was somewhat useful, and good luck with blogging πŸ™‚

      Jamila x

  3. After reading your first post, I was going to give you a Like, because attempting pet dreads is, like, totally the coolest thing ever, but then I would be making a liar of you to anyone who reads your first post after I put a Like on it and sees it there without reading this comment in which I stated that I just now put a Like on it. So let’s just say that a Like is now there in spirit.

Wonderful post, by the way. πŸ™‚

    • Hello there – haha, I love that comment πŸ™‚ Really. THANK YOU for that! And thank you for sparing me the embarrassment of being seen to be lying about the lack of likes on my post XD I appreciate it, hehe.
      Merci x

  4. Hello Jamila! Thank you so much for the nomination, so I’m here typing this comment and trying not to shut my eyes because I seriously can’t describe how sleepy I am, and because I really want to enjoy those two linked posts, I’m going to read them when I wake up tomorrow, (let’s hope I wake up, laughing.) Oh don’t worry, you’ll know I’ve read them because I’ll definitely leave a comment. Now, off to sleep & thanks for the nomination once again. πŸ’™

    • Yes! Exactly – it’s more like quadruple (or more) checking for everything in the end! Thanks, it makes me feel better that I’m not the only one! Haha. Now I have to check that you actually said what I thought you said in your comment. LOL.
